About this diya cookie cutter

Diya cookie cutter outline: a shallow oil-lamp bowl with a teardrop flame on top and a small foot below
Diya cookie cutter outline – the cookie comes out in this shape.

The diya is the heart of Diwali, and this cutter keeps its three parts – the shallow boat-shaped bowl, the teardrop flame and the small rounded foot – in one outline, so every cookie lifts off the board in a single piece. At the default 90 mm the cookie is about 90 mm wide and 77 mm tall, which fits a standard sweet-box cavity.

The narrowest point is the neck between the flame and the bowl. It was widened after test prints and is about 10 mm across at 90 mm. If you shrink the cutter below 70 mm, raise Smoothing a little and chill the cut cookies before baking, so the flame does not brown before the bowl is done.

For gifting, try the diya in nankhatai or a cardamom shortbread: the wide bowl leaves room for a line of piped icing, and the flame takes a dot of saffron-yellow icing well. A set of three sizes – 60, 90 and 120 mm – looks lovely on a thali. Print the 120 mm version with a 1.2 mm blade so it stays stiff.

Size guide

The Size setting is the cookie’s longest side. This is how big the diya cookie comes out at a few common sizes – the generator shows the exact numbers for any size from 30 to 200 mm.

Decorating idea

Flood the lamp in orange or terracotta, the flame in yellow, and add edible gold dots along the rim.

Printing this cutter

  • Material: PLA or PETG, ideally a filament sold as suitable for food contact
  • Settings: 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.2 mm layers, 2–3 walls, no supports – the STL is already rim-down
  • Blade: 1.0 mm thick and 15 mm tall by default; use 1.2 mm above 120 mm
  • Print time: roughly 25–40 minutes at the default size
Food safety: 3D printed cutters have small gaps between layers that can trap dough. Use them for short contact with chilled dough, wash by hand in warm (not hot) soapy water, dry them straight away and keep PLA out of the dishwasher. Replace a cutter once it is scratched or stained.
