About this diwali lantern (kandil) cookie cutter
Akash kandils – the paper sky lanterns hung outside homes for Diwali – are tall and slim, and so is this cutter. At the default 95 mm it is about 95 mm high and 52 mm wide, with a short hook on top and three tassels hanging below the six-sided body. Slim shapes pack well, so you fit more kandils than round cookies on a tray.
The tassels are the part to watch. Each is about 7 mm wide at 95 mm, which cuts and bakes well in a firm, chilled dough. Below about 80 mm they get thin enough to snap when you lift the cookie, so keep this one at 90 mm or more, or go up to 110 mm for a showpiece. Chill the cut cookies for ten minutes so the tassels do not spread into each other.
The plain body is made for lattice work: flood it in a bright base colour, let it set, then pipe a diamond grid in white or gold with a fine tip. Dip only the tassels in coloured sanding sugar so they read as fringe.

Use a fine tip to pipe a lattice on the body, and dip the tassels in coloured sanding sugar.
Printing this cutter
- Material: PLA or PETG, ideally a filament sold as suitable for food contact
- Settings: 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.2 mm layers, 2–3 walls, no supports – the STL is already rim-down
- Blade: 1.0 mm thick and 15 mm tall by default; use 1.2 mm above 120 mm
- Print time: roughly 25–40 minutes at the default size
