About this mitten cookie cutter
Mittens are a winter shape rather than a strictly Christmas one, which makes this cutter useful from the first cold week of December until well into January. The outline has a rounded hand, a thumb that sticks out to one side and a flat bottom edge where the cuff sits. At the default 85 mm the cookie is 85 mm tall and about 62 mm wide.
The thumb is the only part that stands out from the main shape, and it is about 12–13 mm thick at the default size, so it bakes at the same rate as the rest of the cookie. The notch between thumb and hand is rounded, so dough does not stick there. The shape works well from about 60 to 120 mm.
Mittens look best in pairs. The cutter makes a mitten with the thumb on one side; turn every second cookie over before you decorate it and you get the other hand. Decorate each pair in matching colours and tie two together with a ribbon for a sweet stocking filler or a teacher gift.
Size guide
The Size setting is the cookie’s longest side. This is how big the mitten cookie comes out at a few common sizes – the generator shows the exact numbers for any size from 30 to 200 mm.
| Size setting | Cookie (width × height) | Blade | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 mm | 44 × 60 mm | 1.0 mm | Bite-size cookies, cupcake and drink toppers |
| 85 mm | 62 × 85 mm | 1.0 mm | Default – a standard cookie, fits most gift boxes |
| 120 mm | 88 × 120 mm | 1.0 mm | Large gift cookies and centrepieces |
Dough and baking tips
Gingerbread, sugar cookie or spiced shortbread all work. Roll to 5–6 mm and chill before baking. For a knitted look without icing, press the tines of a fork or the end of a piping nozzle into the cuff area before baking – the marks stay sharper in a firm, low-butter dough.
Decorating ideas
- Flood the hand in red or blue, leave the cuff white and add a row of white dots across the hand for a snowflake knit.
- Pipe a zig-zag Nordic pattern in white over a dark gingerbread base – no flooding needed.
- Dip the cuff in white icing and then in desiccated coconut or white nonpareils for a fluffy trim.
Printing this cutter
- Material: PLA or PETG, ideally a filament sold as suitable for food contact
- Settings: 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.2 mm layers, 2–3 walls, no supports – the STL is already rim-down
- Blade: 1.0 mm thick and 15 mm tall by default; use 1.2 mm above 120 mm
- Print time: roughly 25–40 minutes at the default size
