About this christmas star cookie cutter

Christmas star cookie cutter outline: a bold five-point star with wide points
Christmas Star cookie cutter outline – the cookie comes out in this shape.

A star is the most versatile cutter in a Christmas set: it works as a tree topper cookie, a gift tag, a garnish for a trifle or, stacked, as a whole cookie tree. This one is a classic five-point star with deep, wide points. At the default 85 mm it is 85 mm across and about 81 mm tall – a five-point star is always a little shorter than it is wide.

The inner corners are fairly open and the points are broad at the base, so dough does not wedge into the tips the way it does with slim, needle-like stars. That matters because star points are where cookies usually tear. The shape cuts cleanly down to around 40 mm, small enough for stars to scatter over a cake or a bowl of hot chocolate.

For a stacked star tree, print the same template at four or five sizes – for example 50, 65, 80, 95 and 110 mm – bake them, and stack them largest to smallest with each layer turned a little so the points spiral up. A dab of icing between layers holds it together.

Size guide

The Size setting is the cookie’s longest side. This is how big the christmas star cookie comes out at a few common sizes – the generator shows the exact numbers for any size from 30 to 200 mm.

Dough and baking tips

Shortbread and sugar cookie dough both suit stars. Because the points are the thinnest parts, roll evenly to 5 mm and chill the cut stars for 15 minutes; a cold star keeps its points in the oven. If you bake stars of different sizes for a stacked tree, bake each size on its own tray – small stars are ready a few minutes before large ones.

Decorating ideas

  • Flood in yellow and brush with edible gold lustre once dry for a tree-topper star.
  • Pipe a white outline only and dip the edges in coarse sanding sugar – quick, sparkly and no flooding needed.
  • Cut a small star out of the centre of a larger cookie before baking and fill it with crushed boiled sweets for a stained-glass star.

Printing this cutter

  • Material: PLA or PETG, ideally a filament sold as suitable for food contact
  • Settings: 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.2 mm layers, 2–3 walls, no supports – the STL is already rim-down
  • Blade: 1.0 mm thick and 15 mm tall by default; use 1.2 mm above 120 mm
  • Print time: roughly 25–40 minutes at the default size
Food safety: 3D printed cutters have small gaps between layers that can trap dough. Use them for short contact with chilled dough, wash by hand in warm (not hot) soapy water, dry them straight away and keep PLA out of the dishwasher. Replace a cutter once it is scratched or stained.
