About this poinsettia cookie cutter

Poinsettia cookie cutter outline: a flower with six long pointed bracts and six shorter bracts in between around a round centre
Poinsettia cookie cutter outline – the cookie comes out in this shape.

The poinsettia is the Christmas flower, and its star-like shape makes an elegant cookie. What look like red petals are actually bracts – coloured leaves – and this outline has two layers of them: six long, pointed bracts and six shorter ones in between, around a round centre about 24 mm across. At the default 95 mm the cookie is 95 mm tall and about 82 mm wide.

The bracts are lens-shaped and pointed at the tips. They are broad in the middle, so they hold together well, and the shorter inner bracts fill the gaps so the cookie stays strong near the centre. Below about 75 mm the tips get fine; raise Smoothing a little so they come out softly rounded rather than breaking.

Poinsettia cookies look sophisticated on a dessert table or a wedding-style Christmas spread, and they are a good alternative to stars if you want a festive cookie without characters. Try them in red, white or pink – real poinsettias come in all three.

Size guide

The Size setting is the cookie’s longest side. This is how big the poinsettia cookie comes out at a few common sizes – the generator shows the exact numbers for any size from 30 to 200 mm.

Dough and baking tips

A firm sugar cookie or shortbread dough keeps the pointed tips sharp. Roll to an even 5 mm and chill the cut cookies for 15 minutes. Because the points are spread all round the cookie, bake in the middle of the oven and turn the tray halfway for even colour.

Decorating ideas

  • Outline and flood the long bracts in deep red and the short ones in a slightly darker red, then pipe a cluster of small yellow dots in the centre.
  • Pipe a thin line down the middle of each bract while the flood is wet and drag it outwards for a leaf vein.
  • Make white or pink poinsettias with a little pearl lustre for a softer, elegant look.

Printing this cutter

  • Material: PLA or PETG, ideally a filament sold as suitable for food contact
  • Settings: 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.2 mm layers, 2–3 walls, no supports – the STL is already rim-down
  • Blade: 1.0 mm thick and 15 mm tall by default; use 1.2 mm above 120 mm
  • Print time: roughly 25–40 minutes at the default size
Food safety: 3D printed cutters have small gaps between layers that can trap dough. Use them for short contact with chilled dough, wash by hand in warm (not hot) soapy water, dry them straight away and keep PLA out of the dishwasher. Replace a cutter once it is scratched or stained.
