How to make pegboard hooks that fit

  1. Pick your board. Pegboard (measure the holes), SKÅDIS-compatible, or a French cleat wall.
  2. Print the fit test clip first. It takes minutes and tells you if the pegs are tight or loose – adjust the clearance or board sizes.
  3. Choose the accessory – hook, shelf, tool holder, or for French cleats a cup or bin – and set its size.
  4. Print as downloaded. Hooks, shelves and tool holders lie on their side so the layers run along the load; cups and bins stand upright.

Frequently asked questions

Which pegboard do I have?

Measure a hole and the distance between hole centres. Most US and UK pegboard has 1/4" (6.35 mm) holes on a 1" (25.4 mm) grid; thin 1/8" hardboard often has 3/16" holes. IKEA SKÅDIS boards have vertical 5 × 15 mm slots on a staggered 40 mm grid. Choose custom and enter your numbers if yours differ.

Are the SKÅDIS sizes exact?

IKEA doesn’t publish them, so the defaults are community measurements (5 × 15 mm slots, 40 mm grid, about 5 mm board). They fit most boards; print the small fit test clip first and adjust the slot sizes if it’s tight or loose.

How do I hang a pegboard hook?

Tilt the part up slightly, slide the angled peg straight into the hole, then let it swing down. The peg slopes up behind the board, so it can’t be pulled straight off. For SKÅDIS: lift, push the tongue through the slot and let it drop. For French cleat: lower it onto the wall cleat.

Why are cups and bins French cleat only?

Cups and bins print standing up. Pegboard and SKÅDIS pegs stick out sideways, so printed that way they’d need supports. The 45° French cleat prints cleanly upright. For pegboard or SKÅDIS, a shelf with a lip holds most small things.

How much weight will a printed hook hold?

Enough for tools, cables and cans in PETG, printed on its side as downloaded (so the layers run along the hook). Pegboard pegs are limited by the hole size; for heavy tools use SKÅDIS or a French cleat, which spread the load.
