1 · Big and small My turn counterPut a 12 and a 36 on the board (4 holes apart). Clip a flag on each. Put the crank on the 12.
36 12 I turn the 12 … My guess: the 36 turns … I counted … 3 times 6 times 9 times
Now swap: crank the 36 once. How many times does the 12 turn? ______ Which one is faster? ______
2 · Which way? My direction puzzleTurn the first gear clockwise ↻ . Draw an arrow on every other gear to show which way it spins. Then build it and check!
24 12 36 Gears in a row Last gear spins … (↻ or ↺) 2 3 4 5
Find the rule: with an odd number of gears the last one turns ________; with an even number it turns ________.
3 · The rule My gear ratio tableCrank the driver once and count how many turns the follower makes.
Driver (teeth) Follower (teeth) Follower turns per 1 crank turn Driver ÷ follower 36 12 24 12 36 24 12 36 24 24
What do you notice about the last two columns? ________________________________
Engineers call this the gear ratio. Bicycles, clocks and mixers all use it.
4 · Challenge My speed machineBuild the fastest machine you can: one crank turn should spin the last gear as many times as possible. Explorer kit: use a double gear! Draw your machine below and write how many turns you counted. Build the slowest machine. Which one is easier to turn?

Teacher notes Answers and class challenge Sheet 1: turning the 12 three times turns the 36 once (3 → 1, 6 → 2, 9 → 3). Cranking the 36 once turns the 12 three times – the small gear is faster. Sheet 2: neighbouring gears always turn opposite ways. Odd number of gears → last turns the same way as the first (clockwise); even → anticlockwise. Sheet 3: follower turns = driver teeth ÷ follower teeth (36/12 = 3, 24/12 = 2, 36/24 = 1.5, 12/36 = ⅓, 24/24 = 1). Sheet 4: crank a 36 (on a tall pin with a spacer) driving the double gear's small 12 → 3 turns; the double gear's big 36 drives a 12 on the board → 3 × 3 = 9 turns per crank turn. Faster machines are harder to turn – speed is traded for force. Spacing: 12–12 two holes apart, 12–24 three, 12–36 and 24–24 four, 24–36 five (or 3 across + 4 down), 36–36 six.
